Fresno is not small. The city has more than half a million residents and is larger than the state capital, Sacramento. But because it’s in the heart of farm country, it lacks big-city glamour. What it does offer is a more compact power structure that allows even the young to make a difference.

Staat het bij iemand op het verlanglijstje?

Fresno is wel aardig, maar de luchtkwaliteit in de Central Valley is helaas niet erg goed. Wij hebben nu al ruim twee weken te maken met inversie van de luchtlagen, en daardoor veel smog in de Bay Area. Ik moet er niet aan denken dat dat normaal is... Chico is ook wel een aardige plaats overigens, vooral vanwege de universiteit en de vele bomen.

De bijnaam "arm-pit" is niet zozeer vanwege de koeien of het gebrek aan "glamour." Gebrek aan competitie in de "city’s power structure" zal ook van doen hebben met het feit dat Fresno municipal bonds nog maar een enkel stapje van "junk" verwijderd zijn. Maar ik zie dat de Fresno’s Leading Young Professionals al 539 "likes" hebben, dus dat gaat helemaal goed komen.

Niets tegen Fresno, hoor, maar om dat nu aan te raden als een plek om te gaan wonen op basis van een onderzoek naar "the cost of manicures and pedicures"? Dan ken ik toch een landje in het noord-westen van Europa waar het veel beter toeven is.
