LOS ANGELES - De Amerikaanse popzanger Michael Jackson is donderdag in een ziekenhuis in Los Angeles opgenomen. Dit melden Amerikaanse media.

Jackson ademde niet meer toen ambulancemedewerkers hem thuis ophaalden. Nadere informatie over zijn gezondheidstoestand ontbreekt nog.

De vader van de popzanger, Joe Jackson, liet aan de pers weten dat het 'niet goed' gaat met zijn zoon.

Ben benieuwd of dit nieuws serieus bevestigd gaat zijn tegen morgenochtend, als ik terug wakker ben.

Pop star Michael Jackson was rushed to a hospital this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The parademics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told The Times.

[Updated at 2:12 p.m.: Paramedics were called to a home on the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard. Jackson rented the Bel Air home for $100,000 a month. It was described as a French chateau estate built in 2002 with seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces and a theater.

The home is about 2 1/2 miles, about a six-minute drive, from UCLA Medical Center. An earlier version of this post incorrectly described the time to travel between the home and hospital as two minutes.]

The news comes as Jackson, 50, was attempting a comeback after years of tabloid headlines, most notably his trial and acquittal on child molestation charges.

In May, The Times reported that Jackson had rented the Bel Air residence and was rehearsing for a series of 50 sold-out shows in London's O2 Arena. Jackson had won the backing of two billionaires to get the so-called "King of Pop" back on stage.

His backers envision the shows at AEG's O2 as an audition for a career rebirth that could ultimately encompass a three-year world tour, a new album, movies, a Graceland-like museum, musical revues in Las Vegas and Macau, and even a "Thriller" casino. Such a rebound could wipe out Jackson's massive debt.

Het is nog onzeker, maar er zijn verschillende site die al melden dat hij is overleden. BBC World heeft nog geen bevestiging gekregen. LA Times meldt wel dat Jackson is overleden.

Jackson is the seventh of nine children in a well-known musical family. He has three children, Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II.

At the medical center, every entrance to the emergency room was blocked by security guards. Even hospital staffers were not permitted to enter. A few people stood inside the waiting area, some of them crying.

Weer een legende aan het einde gekomen, en natuurlijk veel te vroeg. Ben van de MTV generatie die thuis bleef omdat Thriller op tv kwam, zelfs mensen die niet van zijn muziek hielden keken. Hij zal de geschiedenis ingaan als de King of Pop, de wereld staat weer even stil.

De veelzijdige kant van Michael Jackson, zo kwam hij aan de Moonwalk...tapdans.

Ik vind het verschrikkelijk en ik geef toe dat ik moest huilen toen ik het hoorde. Ik zat op de middelbare school en hij was toen echt op de top van zijn roem! Ik weet nog dat ie toen in NL ging optreden. Die sensatie, onvergetelijk.

Ik zelf hoefde geen traantje te laten toen ik het hoorde. Het is wel erg natuurlijk. Ondanks alle negatieve publiciteit die er de laatste jaren om hem heen was, IS en BLIJFT hij natuurlijk een van de beste artiesten die de wereld heeft gezien.
Zijn albums zullen nu wel ineens razendsnel over de toonbanken gaan.

Hij is inderdaad hartstikke dood. Het Amerikaanse nieuws is 'all over it'. Wij zitten momenteel in San Francisco (vliegen over 9 uur weer naar NL) en volgen een beetje het nieuws.

Triest dat hij dood is. Was / is toch een muzieklegende.

Heb zelf niet zoveel met Michael Jackson.
Vind het wel erg voor de kinderen, aan de andere kant kunnen ze nu misschien wel als "normale" kinderen gaan leven.
Het lijkt ,me toch raar voor een kind om met een masker op over straat te moeten.
