Als ik me niet vergis is Monument Valley geen NP, en zou dit dus ook niet geïmpacteerd mogen zijn door een government shutdown.

The budget proposal released by President Obama is for fiscal year 2012. There is still no budget for this year.
The budget cuts Republicans have proposed are for this year, not 2012, which is what Obama’s been focusing on.
In fact, government operations for the rest of the year could be funded by similar temporary measures if Democrats and Republicans can’t agree on a budget.
The reason there’s no budget for fiscal year 2011 is that the Democrats who had the majority at the time didn’t want to pass a budget in an election year.

Het ziet er niet zo heel geweldig uit. Wij kregen hier vanavond een email van het werk (=overheidsinstelling) waaruit blijkt dat de mogelijkheid van een shutdown als behoorlijk reeël gezien wordt ('given the realities of the calender' zoals ze het zo mooi omschreven) en met info over de gevolgen voor federal employees...

I am a park service employee at Grand Canyon. None of us know what is going on any better than you. Situations like this make public employees look unengaged and stupid, but the problem is that while many of us in the lower ranks of the government try to find out what is going on, no one- not even the park superintendant- has recieved real instructions on what will happen in the event of a shutdown. Sorry for all of your inconvenience. In the event that the gates are locked and you are traveling in to the South Rim area, look for Rowe Well Road on your map. It is a dirt road from Tusayan into the park with no gate that can be closed and locket.

Official statement today (4/6) from the Department of the Interior, regarding what will happen IF the government shuts down:
"All national parks, wildlife refuges and other public lands would be closed and locked in the event of a shutdown. Visitor centers will be closed and access to park areas denied, including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Independence Hall, Alcatraz, and the Washington Monument. Visitors using overnight concession accommodations and campgrounds will be notified and given 48 hours to make alternate arrangements. The National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service and some Bureau of Land Management roads will be closed except when they are necessary as thruways."

Hoe lang zou zo´n shutdown kunnen duren? Is daar iets over te zeggen?

Ik heb iets gevonden wat antwoord geeft op mijn eigen vraag

"The United States federal government shutdown of 1995 was the result of a conflict between Democratic President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress over funding for Medicare, education, the environment and public health. It took place after Clinton vetoed the spending bill which Congress sent him. Thereupon, the Federal government of the United States put non-essential government workers on furlough and suspended non-essential services from November 14 through November 19, 1995 and from December 16, 1995 to January 6, 1996" (bron: Wikipedia)

Dus in 1995/1996 betrof het 2 periodes van een aantal dagen en een aantal weken.

Ik ga begin juli over de plas. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat zo'n shutdown maanden duurt.....

Wel heel vervelend voor degene die de komende weken de oversteek maken.

Ik heb het niet echt gevolgt, maar hoorde verontrustende berichten. Weet iemand of de National parks nu wel of niet open zijn?
Wij gaan in juni dit jaar.

Gaat niet echt soepel zo te lezen... Kan me bijna niet voorstellen dat ze het voor morgen rond krijgen. Las ook ergens dat Obama niet nog eens een extension wil om verder te onderhandelen, dus ziet er niet echt positief uit...
