Wanneer is HIghway 1 weer volledig open?
Groetjes,
Annemarie

Re: Wanneer is HIghway 1 weer volledig open?
https://www.latimes.com/california/stor ... 0in%202025.

Re: Wanneer is HIghway 1 weer volledig open?

GROK 3:
Highway 1 along California’s coast, especially through Big Sur, is notoriously prone to closures due to landslides, repairs, and weather, so I’ll break this down with the latest info I’ve got as of February 24, 2025, 04:20 AM PST, using real-time web and X data, while noting any gaps where specifics might depend on your exact destination "to the south."
Starting from Monterey, Highway 1 is generally open southward through Carmel and into Big Sur, but its status shifts as you go further. Here’s the situation:
- **Monterey to Rocky Creek (about 12 miles south of Carmel):** This stretch is currently open but operates under a 24/7 signal-controlled, one-way alternating traffic system due to emergency repairs from a March 30, 2024, slip-out near Rocky Creek Bridge. Caltrans stabilized the road in 2024, and it’s been accessible since May 17, 2024, ahead of an initial Memorial Day target. However, posts on X from MCoSheriff and CaltransD5 (February 20, 2025) indicate a full overnight closure is planned from Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 10 PM for a traffic switch related to ongoing repairs. No reopening time is specified beyond "overnight," so as of now, it’s open but expect that future closure if your travel is post-March 6.
- **Rocky Creek to Lime Creek (about 14.4 miles south of Big Sur):** From here, you can continue south to Lime Creek (Postmile 32.1), which marks the northern boundary of a major long-term closure. Posts on X from CHP_Monterey (February 18, 2025) confirm all lanes were open recently, aligning with web data showing this section as passable under signal control. So, right now, it’s open from Monterey to Lime Creek.
- **Lime Creek to Vicente Creek Bridge (6.8-mile closure):** This segment, including Regent’s Slide just south of Esalen Institute, has been closed since February 2024 due to a massive landslide (300,000 cubic yards of debris). Web sources like latimes.com (September 30, 2024) and highway1roadtrip.com note that new landslide movement halted repairs, pushing full reopening to at least Spring 2025—possibly later if weather complicates things. Paul’s Slide (further south) reopened in summer 2024, shifting the southern closure point north to Vicente Creek Bridge (Postmile 25.3). Right now, this section is closed, so you can’t drive through from Monterey to points south of Lime Creek without a detour.
- **South of Vicente Creek Bridge (e.g., to Cambria or San Luis Obispo):** From the south, Highway 1 is open from Cambria north to Vicente Creek Bridge, but the closure at Regent’s Slide prevents a continuous trip from Monterey. Web data from Caltrans (roads.dot.ca.gov, February 13, 2025) confirms this gap remains, with no through-traffic possible between Lime Creek and Vicente Creek. To reach southern points like Cambria or San Luis Obispo from Monterey, you’d need to detour inland via Highway 101 (e.g., Monterey to Salinas, then 101 south), a roughly 2.5-hour drive to San Luis Obispo, bypassing the closed coastal stretch.
In summary, as of now, Highway 1 is **open** from Monterey south to Lime Creek (about 32 miles south of Big Sur) with signal-controlled traffic around Rocky Creek, but **closed** beyond that to Vicente Creek Bridge due to Regent’s Slide. It’s open again south of Vicente Creek from places like Cambria, but you can’t drive straight through from Monterey to those southern points without a detour. The full route from Monterey to, say, San Luis Obispo won’t be open until at least Spring 2025, pending Regent’s Slide repairs. Weather or new slides could shift this—February’s wet season often brings surprises.
If you’re planning a trip and need a specific southern endpoint (e.g., Cambria, LA), let me know, and I can tailor this further. Want me to check Caltrans QuickMap for the absolute latest on a particular spot?
