Honderden toeristen hebben de Grand Canyon moeten verlaten. De voor de VS belangrijke toeristische trekpleister wordt door bosbranden bedreigd.
Rookwolken
Hoewel het vuur nog 45 kilometer van de Canyon verwijderd is zijn er al dikke rookwolken te zien. De vlammenzee heeft de enige toegangsweg aan de noordzijde van het natuurpark afgesloten.
Droog weer
De staten Arizona, Californië, Nevada, Colorado en New Mexico kampen al weken met bosbranden. Het warme en droge weer maakt de bestrijding van de branden lastig.
Dit stond vanmorgen op RTL Nieuws. Ik weet niet precies wie van jullie heel binnenkort de Grand Canyon gaan bezoeken, maar het is wel iets om rekening mee te houden!

Update on North Rim Closure
Grand Canyon, Ariz. – Highway 67 and the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park remain closed today as a result of the Warm Fire. The Warm Fire, which started on June 8, 2006 by lightning, is burning approximately 30 miles north of the North Rim developed area.
The North Kaibab Ranger District closed to public access this morning at 8:00 a.m. and will remain closed until further notice. The closure is due to fire and firefighting activity related to the Warm Fire.
The National Park Service (NPS) along with Joe Reinarz’s Northern Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team (IMT) began escorting visitors out of the North Rim yesterday. Seventy seven vehicles were escorted out of the park and into Fredonia, Ariz., using Forest Road 22, a dirt road west of the fire.
This morning, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety, and Arizona Department of Transportation are working in unison to evaluate highway 67 to determine if it is safe and free of hazards. Once this has been determined the remaining visitors and park employees will be escorted from the park. If it is determined that Highway 67 is not passable the National Park Service and the IMT will continue to escort visitors out of the park using Forest Road 22.
Visitors are currently staged at the Grand Canyon Lodge, the North Rim Campground and North Rim Entrance Station. NPS officials hope to have the remaining 150 vehicles escorted out of the park by noon today. Park employees will be escorted out sometime early this afternoon.
Coconino County Emergency Services in coordination with the American Red Cross are working to set up facilities to provide support for park employees and residents that will be escorted from the park. Additional information on the location of those facilities will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will remain closed until further notice. The South Rim of Grand Canyon remains open. All facilities and services on the South Rim are open and accessible.
Information on the status of North Rim Lodging can be obtained by calling 1-888-297-2757. Information on camping can be obtained by calling Spherix at 1-800-365-2267 and for backcountry camping, please call Grand Canyon’s Backcountry Information Center at 1-928-638-7875.

Maar ook Sedona wordt bedreigd door hevige bosbranden tot aan de rand met de Alt 89. 1500 acres zijn al weggebrand. Ze kampen in de regio met hevige droogtes en bidden voor regen.
Wij waren vorig jaar in Noord-Portugal en zijn meer dan eens heel kort bij de bosbranden geweest. Een bos tot aan de muur van de tuin waar we verbleven, helemaal weg, effen lekker panikeren. Wegen en zelfs snelwegen afgesloten, miserie, de lucht vol asse en rook, en warm! Ongelooflijk hoe de vlammen overslaan en de brand zich verder uitbreidt. Je ziet de uiteinden van de hoge vlammen gewoon overslaan van het ene bos naar het andere over een autobaan, niet te geloven wat een kracht zo'n brand wel heeft.
Liever niet opnieuw of dan ver van ons vandaan hoor.

Residents returned to a canyon that had been threatened for days.
But fire crews were able to keep flames from reaching a single structure.
The Brins Fire started as a transient's campfire on June 18th and spread rapidly in steep terrain above Oak Creek Canyon.
About 430 homes and about 30 businesses in the canyon were quickly evacuated that day as fire teams moved in.

18 en 20 juni zijn wij in de Grand Canyon (south Rim) geweest. Toen al was er een brand aan de North Rim. Vanuit de South Rim zag je een witte rookwolk, verder niets. Wij logeerden in Flagstaff en hebben toen de meest bizarre zonsverduistering gezien. De rookwolk van de Sedonabrand trok onze kant uit ( begin juni was hier ook al een brand, maar deze wakkerde steeds weer aan door de droogte en dat zal nu ook wel aan de hand zijn) Gelukkig geen problemen met ademhaling of zoiets. Je rook het niet! 21 Juni zijn wij via Interstate 17 en 179 naar Sedona gegaan. De 89a van Flagstaff - Sedona was afgesloten ivm bluswerk en brandweerlui die daar bezig waren een tegenvuur te openen om zo de huizen te beschermen. Vanuit Sedona zagen wij helicopters en vliegtuigjes bezig met het bluswerk. Soms zagen wij de vlammen omhoog komen. Hier ook geen rookoverlast of problemen met ademen. Oak Creek Canyon hebben wij niet kunnen bekijken, maar de rest van de 89A naar het zuiden maakte veel goed. Aanradertje voor iedereen die richting Phoenix gaat. Prachtige reis gehad. Voor iedereen die in de warme staten van de USA gaat verblijven: volg het lokale nieuws op de tv. Daar hebben wij alle info vandaan gehaald en zo wisten wij precies wat afgesloten was en hoe de toestand daar was. Verder lange broeken thuis laten, want het is in Phoenix bloedje heet 112F
