Light rain slowed the growth of a wildfire burning on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and fire officials said the rains helped crews hold and strengthen fire perimeter lines to the north and south.

More rain and cloud cover was expected Tuesday, further reducing growth of the Fuller Fire, according to a National Park Service spokeswoman.

The fire, caused by a lightning strike June 29, covered 14,131 acres as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, a growth of 446 acres overnight. Fire officials reported zero percent containment in an otherwise optimistic fire-status report.

A National Park Service spokeswoman said the fire remained primarily on the forest floor, creeping along wooded parts of the ground and burning logs. Fire officials expected the fire to continue to smolder and creep toward the west and within the interior of the fire.

A smattering of showers brought the area up to a quarter-inch of rain Monday.

The 586-person crew will spend Tuesday searching for and destroying hot spots around the perimeter, fire officials said.

Kaibab National Forest District Ranger Randall Walker said fire is a natural part of the area's ecosystem that could help clean out the forest floor.

"Fire has been a natural process across this landscape for thousands of years," Walker said in a statement. "Our special wilderness places will be more sustainable and resilient in the future because of this fire."

Parts of the North Rim, including the Visitor Center, Lodge and Campground, are open for visitors, but much of the area remains closed. State Route 67 is open, as well.

All forest areas east of SR 67, south of Tater Ridge Road and east of House Rock Valley Road are closed until further notice.

We houden de site even in de gaten en kijken dan of we toch gaan. Ik zag dat je nu inderdaad de helft kunt zien.
