Ik vind het een prachtig lied, ken wel alleen het eerste couplet (wist niet eens, dat er meer waren!). Ga je ook een wav neerzetten, zodat we je kunnen horen zingen, PeeJay? Fort McHenry in Baltimore, waar het lied geschreven is, staat hoog op mijn lijst van "te bezoeken".

Ik vind het een prachtig lied, ken wel alleen het eerste couplet (wist niet eens, dat er meer waren!). Ga je ook een wav neerzetten, zodat we je kunnen horen zingen, PeeJay?

En dat lijkt me nou niet echt verstandig....

Er zit een prachtige geschiedenis achter het lied. Het is geschreven tijdens de Oorlog van 1812 (in 1814) door Francis Scott Key, die het gevecht tussen de Britten en de Amerikanen bij Fort McHenry in Baltimore aanschouwde. Dit gevecht bracht een ommekeer in de oorlog, want de Amerikanen hielden stand. Het lied beschrijft dus dat gevecht tijdens de nacht.

De originele Star Spangled Banner is te bekijken in het American History Museum in Washington DC. Er is een poging ondernomen om de vlag te restoreren, maar dat is niet goed gelukt. Hij ligt nu dus achter glas. Het is een interessante tentoonstelling om te bezoeken.

Als ik mij niet vergis zat F. Scott Key op een schip en was hij geïnspireerd door de vlag die hij door de rook zag op Fort McHenry.
Fort McHenry is een bezoek zeker waard. Als je toch in die buurt van Baltimore (mijn geboortestad) bent, vergeet dan ook het American Visionary Art Museum niet (http://www.avam.org), ook een heel fascinerende plaats!

On Sept. 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key visited the British fleet in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes, who had been captured after the burning of Washington, DC. The release was secured, but Key was detained on ship overnight during the shelling of Fort McHenry, one of the forts defending Baltimore. In the morning, he was so delighted to see the American flag still flying over the fort that he began a poem to commemorate the occasion. First published under the title “Defense of Fort M'Henry,” the poem soon attained wide popularity as sung to the tune “To Anacreon in Heaven.” The origin of this tune is obscure, but it may have been written by John Stafford Smith, a British composer born in 1750. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was officially made the national anthem by Congress in 1931, although it already had been adopted as such by the army and the navy.

Vele Amerikanen vinden dat de Star Spangled Banner te moeilijk is om te zingen.
America,the Beautiful is veel beter voor een nationaal volkslied'
" The land of the free" vind ik heel ironic, daar waren al heel veel slaven in dien tijd

Toen wij afgelopen zomer in Las Vegas waren en stonden te kijken naar de dansende fonteinen, dansten de fonteinen op Land of the free. Het werkte wat op mijn (en Cor's) lachspieren, vooral omdat de Amerikanen om ons heen zo hard meezongen (sommigen met de hand op het hart en tranen in de ogen).

Om de een of andere reden krijg ik altijd een brok in mijn keel als ik die patriottische liedjes hoor, misschien ook, omdat iedereen luidkeels meezingt. America, the Beautiful vind ik ook een prachtig lied en God Bless the USA van Lee Greenwood. De enige die ik vreselijk vind is God Bless America.
Ik weet nog, dat we hier een pas een paar jaar woonden en onze buurman ons meenam naar een of ander patriotisch concert van militaire bands. Prachtig!
Gek genoeg heb ik dat nooit bij het Wilhelmus gevoeld. En wel weer bij "Oh, Canada".

Dank je, heel mooie foto's! Nu heb ik wel de hele nacht dat lied in mijn hoofd .

Het wordt wel veel vaker gespeeld dan het Wilhelmus hier in Nederland.
Zowat voor elke sportwedstrijd, evenement of rodeo hoor je het 'Star Spangled Banner'. En in een baseballstadion kun je de tekst vaak meelezen op zo'n gigantisch videoscherm.
Ik betrap mezelf er vaak op dat ik dan mee sta te zingen...
