Displaying the flag

Bericht door Fuzzy »

Dit komt uit een brochure van de US army. Patriotism, Alles in belang en met respect van de vlag. :)

In recent decades, the meaning behind flag ceremonies and the rationale for how to display the flag has faded a bit from American conciousness. This year, howerver, the American public has reawakened to the power of the American flag as a symbol for which we fight and strive. The U.S. Army is pleased to provide these helpful guidelines.

Displaying the flag

Multiple Flags On The Same Staff
U.S. Flag at peak, above any other flag.

Grouped Flags
U.S. flag goes to its own right. Flags of other nations are flown at same height on seperate staffs.

Marching
U.S. flags to marchers' right (observers' left).

On Speakers' Platform
When displayed with a speakers' platform, it must be above and behind the speaker. If mounted on a staff, it is on the speakers' rght.

As Decoration
Never use the flag for decoration. Use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red.

Over A Street
Union (stars) faces north or east depending on the direction of the street.

At Half Staff
On special days, the flag may be flown at half staff. On Memorial Day, it is flown at half staff until noon and then raised. The flag, when flown at half staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

Saluting The Flag
Head bare (woman and military leave hats on), right hand over hear, standing at attention. (Military saluting)

Lapel Flag Pin
Should be worn on the left lapel near the heart

DO NOT...
* let the flag touch the ground.
* fly flag as upside down unless there is an emergency.
* carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.
* use the flag as clothing.
* store the flag where it can get dirty.
* use it as a cover.
* fasten it or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free.
* draw on it, or otherwise mark the flag.

Disposing of the Stars and Stripes

* Flags should be disposed of in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
* A flag that has been on display should never been tossed into the trash or recycled as clothing.
* Small flags onn car antennas ad windows, and plastic flags waved by spectators at a parade, may be thrown in the trash because they are considered only representations of the flag.
* Burning a flag requires reverence, a standard that might not be met by using a fireplace or a backyard grill.
* A burn barrel is usually adequate, although some city ordinances ban burning the synthetic materials used in some flags.
* Many of 15,000 American Legion psts across the nation, conduct flag-disposal ceremonies. These are often on Flag Day (June 14th) or Independence Day (July 4th).
